Chapter Ten ~ Blood Promises

Edward tried his best not to smile like a lovesick fool, though he loved the fact that Bella had her arm over his allowing him to assist her down the long hallway. Making sure he took small steps so that she could keep up with ease, their pace was languid. Halfway down the hall, Bella stopped.

“Are you okay? Do I need to get the nurse?” Edward asked worriedly.

“No, I am fine. I just wanted to ask you why you stayed at the hospital all this time?” Bella questioned, her eyes searching his. It was then she noticed the dark circles under them. He had not been sleeping well and it was all her fault. When she had first found out that he had lied about his name, she was mad, hurt, and disappointed, but over the last few days, her temper had calmed and she was ready to discuss where they were going to go from here.

Edward wanted to be honest with her, knowing that his deception had caused her stress. Seeing a couple of chairs at the end of the hall, he thought it would be better to sit down for his confession. “Let’s sit down so I can give you my full attention,” he said, pointing to the chairs.

They slowly made it to the chairs and once they did, Edward assisted Bella onto the chair. Once settled, Edward moved the other chair, so he was in front of her. He didn’t like that they were out in the open, where anyone who walked by could hear their conversation. Before sitting down, he looked around to make sure that his and her guards were stationed so they could handle any problems that might come up. Confident that security was where they were supposed to be, he sat down. He couldn’t believe how nervous he was and Edward Cullen, Captain of the Cullen family, was never worried.

Bella could tell he was having a hard time and when she saw him rake his hand through his hair she knew he was nervous. Reaching over, she placed her hand on his knee. “Edward, just tell me what you want.”

Taking a deep cleansing breath, he looked up and gave her a small smile. Placing his hand on top of hers, he squeezed it. “When I arrived at your apartment building and was told you were in the ambulance, my heart stopped. I knew that it was my fault because I had mistreated you at the museum. I arrived at the hospital and I needed to get to you to see if you and our babies were getting the best care possible. Damn guards wouldn’t let me through and Garrett came to my aid,” he explained, he saw the look of shock when he said Garrett’s name. It was then he remembered that she didn’t know that he knew him. “Garrett is the family physician.”

“Oh, he is a great doctor. He seems to have very liberal office hours since I often see him around the building,” Bella said.

“Bella, he is not your typical physician; he is the “family” doctor,” he stressed.

“So, your parents and brothers go to him as well?” She asked, confused by the way he had stressed the word ‘family’.

Edward glanced around. “Bella, he is part of the Cullen Family. When something goes wrong, we can’t go to a traditional doctor because they are bound to inform the police of gunshot wounds.”

“Oh,” she murmured as a shiver ran through her body. She was still coming to grips with the fact that Edward was in the mafia. Esme had been forthcoming with answers to the questions that she had while she sat with her. Yeah, they made the bulk of the money off illegal enterprises, despite that Edward had started several new adventures that were completely legal. Despite every dirty detail that Esme had shared with her, the one thing that stayed in front of her thoughts was that family always came first. This brought her back to why Edward had left her that night. Carlisle had been shot and he had to get back to New York to be with his family. She still felt abandoned, though that might be because she was hormonal. Pregnancy will do that.

“Bella, I know you probably have hundreds of questions about the family and I promise to answer everyone that I can,” Edward stated, turning her hand over and rubbing his thumb over her palm. “I couldn’t leave you here, not knowing whether or not that you and our children would be alright. If you needed something, I wanted to be the one to give it to you. Your health and happiness is my number priority. I can’t promise that I won’t fuck up again, but I will try my damnest to always be there for you and whatever you need no matter what time day or night I will make sure you get it.”

Bella’s hand was tingling from his touch. It was the same feeling that she had felt the night that they made love and created the tiny little blessings that she was carrying. “Edward, I am sorry for not allowing you to explain, but you did say some very hurtful things.”

“I know and I will forever regret every vile disgusting word I muttered,” he groaned, dropping his head in shame.

Pulling her hand free from his grasp, she placed it under his chin, raising it so she could look into his sad green eyes. “I accept your apology, Edward. Now, help me up so I can finish my walk. I want to get out of here tomorrow.”

Edward stood putting out his arm so she could pull herself up and when she was stable on her feet, they walked arm and arm back towards her room. As they neared her door, she noticed the woman and man who stood on either side of the door. She had seen them before and wondered if Edward had something to do with them being there.

“Who are they?” Bella asked in a whisper.

“They are your guards,” he answered.

“Let’s get you settled and allow the nurse to take your blood pressure, and then I will explain,” Edward implored, giving her one of his heart-stopping smiles.

“Stop that. I need my heartbeat to be normal,” she grumbled.

Leaning down, Edward whispered in her ear. “You make my heart race as well.”

Bella gasped, his hot breath sent shivers down her body, making her nipples harden and an ache in her core. “Edward,” she moaned.

“I promise to make you feel better after your vitals,” he murmured, placing a kiss behind her ear.

Bella glared at him as she took off her robe and sat on the bed. “That did not help the situation one bit.”

Edward bent over and took off her slippers. “I’m,” he began, giving her a wink. “Not sorry.”

“Asshole!” Bella growled, slapping him on the arm. Reaching over, she pushed the button for the nurse.

Ten minutes later, Jessica walked in. “So, how did you fare with the walk?”

“Good. I am a little tired, but I think that is because I haven’t walked much in the last few days,” Bella explained.

“Fine,” Jessica said, going over and hooking the O2 sensor back on Bella’s finger and placing the blood pressure cuff around her arm, allowing it to pump up, putting pressure onto Bella’s arm. As the cuff began to deflate, she watched the numbers.

“What is it?” Bella asked, turning towards the screen.

“125 over 75,” Jessica answered.

“Really!” Bella gushed. “Edward, it stayed down.”

“It did, My Cuishie (my heart),” Edward drawled, his voice gravelly with emotion.

Jessica couldn’t believe a man as handsome as Mr. Cullen was with someone as plain as Bella. Hell, she didn’t even allow him in her room until today. If Jessica had her way, she would pull him into the nearest closet and suck him off then fuck him. He looked like he needed a release and she was just the woman to give it to him. “Is there anything else you need?”

“No, I am fine,” Bella answered.

“Mr. Cullen, is there anything I can do to you, no I mean for you,” Jessica asked, straightening her back, so her chest stuck out more.

“I have everything I want or need right here,” Edward said, wrapping his arm around Bella and placing a kiss to her temple.

“Hmmph,” Jessica huffed, spinning around and stomping out of the room.

Edward hadn’t removed his arm around Bella even after the nurse had stormed out of the room in the huff. There was no way he would ever give her a second glance when he had a chance with Bella and it wasn’t just because she was carrying his children. She was everything he could ever want in a woman.

Bella’s heart was still racing over the declaration that Edward had given Jessica and the feel of lips on her temple. There was nothing like this feeling. Turning her head, she came nose to nose with him. Her eyes widened and her breaths became shallow. “Edward,” she whispered, her lips mere inches away from his and instinctively her tongue came out licking her dry lips.

He could feel the warmth from her breathe and the sweet smell floated up to his nose, causing him to groan. His restraint was hanging on by a delicate thread, knowing that if she did one thing more, he wouldn’t be able to control the need to claim her mouth. Then it happened, her sweet tongue came out, licking her full lips. His control snapped and he leaned down, claiming her lips. The feel of her lips brought back the feelings of that night. As wonderful as it felt, he needed more. Angling his head, he pressed his lips harder against hers and when he did, she wrapped her arms around his neck, grabbing hold of his hair, tugging it, so he was even closer than before. Then he felt her tongue on his lips, demanding entrance to his mouth. Opening up, she pushed her tongue into his mouth, rubbing, and dancing around his tongue. He couldn’t help but moan at the incredible feeling. They continued this dance of the tongues, until they were both needing air. Breaking apart, they both gasped.

Bella’s chest was heaving as she tried to get some much-needed air, even though she missed the contact of his lips. When she was finally able to think, she opened her eyes, staring into his deep green pools. She could see the passion, but there was something else there, though she didn’t know what it was.

Edward knew when he looked into her deep enchanting eyes that this woman was the one for him. No one else would ever come close. Bella Swan was now the owner of his heart and soul. She was Mo fhiorghra (my true love). “A chulsle, a chroi (My pulse, my heart).”

Bella pulled back. “What did you say?”

“One day I will tell you, not now because I don’t want to scare you,” Edward disclosed, one side of his mouth twisting into a smirk.

“You may be the Captain of the family, in spite of that I am not afraid of you,” she declared, raising her eyebrow in amusement.

Leaning down, it placed a quick kiss on her lips. “I am glad you are not afraid of me. Now, let’s get you back in bed.” She allowed him to assist her back into the bed, fluffing her pillow and pulling up the blanket over her legs. Once she was settled, he sat down in the chair next to her. “I promised to tell you about the two guards who are at your door. They are part of a team that will be with you from now on.”

“I don’t need guards,” Bella said, her mouth in a hard line.

“Yes, you do. Bella, I hate that it is necessary, but since you are the mother of my children, my enemies could try to do harm to you. I couldn’t live if something like that happened. I don’t know if I could survive. Please don’t fight me about this.”

Bella thought for a moment. “It kinda sucks that I am thrown into danger and we haven’t even had a date.”

“Well, I can’t have that. Miss Swan, would you give me the great honor of going out on a date with me?” Edward asked, taking her hand into his.

“I would love that,” she replied.

“Perfect. Once you are back home, we will plan something special,” Edward declared.

They continued to hold hands in blissful silence. Then it hit Bella, she had seen a woman by the door. “Edward, is one of my guards a woman?”

“Yes. Emmett thought you would be more comfortable with having women guards. There will be one on every shift,” he explained.

“Thank you. It does make me feel better,” Bella said, placing her other hand on top of his.

Edward loved the feel of her delicate hands on his. “Now, what would you like for a snack tonight?”

“I don’t need anything,” she whispered, even though she did have an intense craving.

Edward reached up and stroked her cheek. “I know that there has to be something that my little boys are carving.”

“Nope, nothing at all,” she smirked, her eyes dancing.

Taking his hand from her cheek, he placed it on the swell of her belly. The place that was protecting, nurturing their babies. Leaning down, he began talking. “What do my little boys want for a snack?”

Bella’s eyes filled with tears, watching Edward talk to their children. It was the most precious sight that she had ever seen. “Chocolate cake.”

Edward looked up and smiled. “Chocolate cake, it will be.” Taking out his phone, he sent a text to Phil to find the most delicious chocolate cake in New York. “It will be here soon.”

Thirty minutes later, Bella was moaning over the chocolate goodness as Edward fed her bite after bite. When she was finished, Edward helped her up and to the bathroom. She used the bathroom, brushed her teeth, and washed her face. Looking in the mirror, she was shocked by the healthy glow on her cheeks. Was this because she felt better, or was this because of the green-eyed god sitting by her bed? Opening the door, he rushed towards her offering his arm for her to lean on. Once she was back in her bed, she was ready to go to sleep.

“Thank you for all you have done for me this evening,” she said, ducking her head, allowing her hair to fall in curtains around her face.

Edward brushed it away, cupping her face in his large hand. “I am so happy that you allowed me to help. Is Alice coming soon?” He asked, knowing that she was the one that stayed the overnight shift.

“No. She is not going to be able to come tonight. I will be fine without her,” Bella murmured.

“Would it be alright if I stayed?” Edward asked, his heart leaping over the thought of it.

“Are you sure?”

“If not in here, I will be sleeping out there,” he said, pointing to the waiting room.

“Oh. Okay. The chair actually pulls out into a bed.”

“Great. I will be right back. I have a bag with some clothes in a hall closet. The hospital staff has been very nice to allow me to keep it there,” Edward explained. Strolling out the room, he went to the closet and collected his bag. He stopped and explained to his guard that he would stay in the room for the evening and coordinate with Bella’s guard on surveillance for the night. Coming back in the room, he noticed Bella looking at the door. Was she watching for him? Was she excited that he was staying? He went into the bathroom. After using the toilet, he decided to take a quick shower. Stepping out, he slipped on a pair of pajama pants and a t-shirt. After brushing his teeth and running a brush through his hair, he walked out to find Bella fast asleep. Placing his bag beside the chair, he pulled it out to the so-called bed. It was small, yet it was better than the small couch he had been sleeping on. Grabbing the pillow and blanket from the nook next to the window, he laid on the bed. He looked back at Bella, his heart was so full of love for this woman. Stepping over, he leaned down and placed a sweet kiss on her forehead. “Goodnight, my love.”

Turning off the light, he climbed onto the bed and covered up. A few minutes later, he was fast asleep, dreaming of the woman who was his world.
